A Rich Tradition
What started as a simple idea at a town meeting in 1950 has brought life and joy to a small community each fall that continues to flourish to this day. Five men, along with various community clubs, volunteered their time and efforts to begin the Drexel Community Fair. The small community was thriving at that time due to the Drexel Heritage Furniture plant and the textile industry. The fair started at that time as a free admission fair, and although the community has suffered the loss of the furniture and textile industry, continues the tradition of free admission to this day.
The Drexel Community Fair is one of only two North Carolina Agriculture Fairs with Free admission and the only one with all aspects of an agricultural fair. The fair has won many awards at the North Carolina Agriculture Fair Association conference throughout the years. They have included awards for growth, cleanliness, and safety. The Fair has also won many awards for the ‘Goodness Grows” / “Got To Be NC Agriculture” booth displays that are arranged by members each year, promoting North Carolina Agriculture.
Recently the Drexel Community Fair won the coveted Image Award in the small fair category.
In 1954 the fair moved to its present site below the Drexel Community Center. Since that time the fair has had 16 presidents who have volunteered their time and expertise in order to make the fair possible. Alongside these presidents, their have been many fair board members that united to make decisions about the fair. These board members have devoted countless hours throughout the years to plan and implement the working of the fair as a labor of love for the community. It has always been the goal of the fair board to provide excellence in entertainment, with good and affordable food, rides and amusements.
The Drexel Community fair welcomes everyone to the fair. It is presented with pride and with the hope that it will be enjoyed by all who attend. Our purpose is to continue the traditions that have made this fair fun and exciting for all
